Diversity & Inclusion Presents: Maxwell Murray of the University of Denver

Preventing Targeted Violence 101

This 101 training is an introduction to the issue of targeted violence and violent extremism in Colorado, with an emphasis on foundational mental health approaches to supporting those who are targeted and engaging with those who are at risk to engage in targeted violence.

It focuses on preventative practices to keep all involved safe, and aims to strengthen not only a community’s understanding of the issue but also their knowledge of available resources and supports. The 101 is a precursor to trainings that offer more advanced mental health and safety approaches to prevention.

Key Take-Aways:
• Targeted violence is a broad category and is prevalent in Colorado
• Preventing targeted violence involves awareness, collective understanding of available resources, plans to share information and access support, community-wide buy in to confront the problem when it occurs, and close individuals who can engage those who may be at risk to engage in targeted violence.

The Colorado Resilience Collaborative (CRC) is made up of clinicians, researchers, and students with varying backgrounds and experience across mental health, public health, and public policy sectors.  They focus on strengthening a community’s ability to prevent targeted violence, and interrupt involvement in violent extremism, through training, consultation, and technical support.
